YouTuber couple Myka and James Stauffer were at the center of a controversial case in 2020, which has now become a documentary series on HBO. The couple allegedly rehomed their adopted son three years after documenting the adoption process of the child in a vlog.
Myka and James Stauffer posted a video in 2020 explaining how they had rehomed a four-year-old adopted child from China named Huxley. The couple had documented the entire adoption process for their followers.
They went public to explain why Huxley was rehomed, claiming there were “unknowns in the process.” Followers were shocked.
“And when Huxley came home, there were many special needs we didn’t know about and that weren’t disclosed to us,” James Stauffer said in the video, which was deleted along with the couple’s YouTube channel.
“We never wanted to be in this position. And we tried to meet his needs and help him as much as possible. We really loved him,” he continued, while Myka cried, saying she felt like a “failure as a mother.”
“They found someone who they believe is the best choice, and he is thriving, very happy, doing very well. His new mom has professional medical training, and it’s a great fit,” Myka said.
The couple’s lawyers told People Magazine that they sought the best treatment for Huxley’s issues.
The HBO documentary series titled “An Update on Our Family” (the same title used in Myka and James’ video) delves into the Stauffers’ controversies and how other families are using their children to gain more views on social media.
Myka Stauffer had 700,000 followers on her YouTube channel and over 300,000 on the family’s channel. They shared a photo of Huxley with their subscribers even before the adoption was finalized.
“An Update on Our Family” will be divided into three parts, which will air on HBO until January 29.
